EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
M.S. (est. 2006) Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR.
B.S. (2001) Animal Science, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR.
Minor in Agriculture Systems Technology Management and Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science
Brian Pugh grew up in a small agriculture based community north of Van Buren, Arkansas, at the foothills of the Ozarks. His family initially raised Quarter horses and Registered Simmentals, and the Simmental herd continues through today. Brian was an active 4-H and FFA officer and member, and attended numerous cattle shows in his 10 year 4-H career. He worked with friends and neighbors as a youth on their dairy, beef and poultry operations. However, he contributes his true love for agriculture and Extension to his family.
His father was born and raised in Haskell County Oklahoma, and after receiving a degree from OSU began a career with Extension in Arkansas that lasted 7 years before taking a job with Farmland Industries (now Land O'Lakes) as Feed Sales Manager. It was through Extension that his father and mother met; however, his mother continued on with Extension for a 33 year career.
Brian improved his wide-based agriculture knowledge as an undergraduate by working towards two minors as well as his animal science degree. During graduate school, Brian studied in Soil Fertility, dealing with both Macro and Micronutrient studies in major crops. His thesis research was conducted on a new-found fertility problem, potassium deficiency in Arkansas rice. Research conducted looked at various sampling methods used to determine nutrient deficiencies, and the kinetics of potassium uptake by rice, as well as alleviating deficiency symptoms.
After a summer research study with the Arkansas Extension Service in Washington County, looking at fly control with predatory wasps, and near completion of his Master's degree, Brian joined the OSU Extension team in 2004, where he currently serves as Haskell County Extension Educator- Agriculture, 4-H Youth Development & CED. He believes that Extension is the only grassroots organization left that provides producers with research-based information necessary for an economically viable operation in a new century. One of his many programming responsibilities includes mandatory initial 9-Hour and update education on waste management for poultry growers and litter applicators.
